A lot of women, prior to becoming pregnant or giving birth often dream up what their lives will look link once they have a baby (I sure do)! But sometimes, things don't go according to plan. Work together to develop a relationship that is free from stress and excessive arguments, develop a bond that is unbreakable, and become each other's best friend - because taking on the responsibility of a new life is so much more than glitz and glamour. You are both going to need to be each other's rock when things get tough. Having a baby will mean a lot less time for your partner and a heck of a lot less sleep, something you both need to be prepared for. Before the Bump: 10 Ways to Ready Yourself for Pregnancy (part one)

Okay my lovelies, so let me just say here… as a woman and as a midwife I know this blog post is all about the ideals. I am totally aware of that, so if you were like 50% of our population and had an unplanned surprise pregnancy, then hey! Congrats and don’t stress. If you are in the other 50% and are planning your pregnancy, then I hope these are some helpful tips. As a midwife, my recommendation is always to seek professional help from a midwife, fertility specialist, GP etc. before falling pregnant. If you are interested in genetic testing (which I haven’t spoke about here) then seeing your GP for some direction is the first place to start.

A home birth story

I got out of the pool quickly and my midwife starts talking hospital transfer. I immediately disagreed, as did her assistant, realising I was just in need of fluids. I was PETRIFIED of childbirth... until I learnt of hypnobirthing

Labour is hard hard work BUT with the correct mindset, breathing techniques and relaxation, it is so manageable. When I found out I was pregnant I was convinced I’d take the epidural as soon as I could.Six months later and I did it with nothing but a bit of music, a birthing ball and some VERY encouraging midwives. I can honestly say giving birth was one of the most empowering things I have ever done.
